Garrett Hendricks - Anthony

Article photo - The Americana Heartbeat - September 2025

Garrett Hendricks turns loss into something achingly human on Anthony. Written after a childhood friend's death by overdose, the song feels like an open letter to everyone left behind. Over spare guitar and mournful pedal steel, Hendricks' voice carries both weight and tenderness; a delivery that makes every line feel lived-in.

What makes Anthony so powerful is its empathy: Hendricks channels the ache of parents, siblings, and friends trying to piece together life after tragedy. It's a stark, unvarnished moment on Hendricks' upcoming album, Northwest & Southbound (out October 8), a record that wrestles with mortality and belonging across folk, country, and rock terrain.

If Johnny Cash once said the truth sounds better with less behind it, Hendricks proves the point here, letting the story breathe, letting grief sing.

Trish Imbrogno - Cherokee Shuffle

Cherokee Shuffle bursts with bluegrass joy, Trish Imbrogno's upright bass bouncing like sunlight on a river. Fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and guitar dance around each other in a lively, infectious shuffle that practically makes your feet move on their own and your heart be filled with optimism.

Taken from her debut EP Bluegrass Love Songs Volume One (out November 7), Cherokee Shuffle is both a tribute to tradition and a playful, uplifting love letter to the genre itself.

Josh Fortenbery - Nobody Is Pleased

Article photo - The Americana Heartbeat - September 2025

Fortenbery casts life's small frustrations across a wide Alaskan sky, blending wry self-reflection with tender melancholy. The Pedal steel underscores his introspective lyrics, creating a dreamlike folk-country soundscape that carries you away on a peaceful walk along quiet country roads, past misty mountains and fields of golden grass.

Taken from his upcoming album, Tidy Memorial (out October 10), Nobody Is Pleased is a quiet meditation on the patterns we can’t escape, simultaneously honest, anxious, and oddly comforting.

West & Jackson - She's A Cowgirl

West & Jackson's She's A Cowgirl gallops like the desert wind, celebrating the untamed freedom and fierce heart - an anthem that captures the wild spirit of a Southern cowgirl.

Their vocals and twangy guitars carry you down sun-baked Georgia country roads, while lyrics of bonfires, horseshoes, and renegade nights paint her in vivid, unforgettable strokes. She's A Cowgirl is a sparkling ode to independence and the thrill of being wholly alive.

The Unfaithful Servants - Fallen Angel

Article photo - The Americana Heartbeat - September 2025

Warm and cozy, yet steeped in yearning, Fallen Angel drapes Dylan Stone's expressive vocals over a compelling backdrop of mandolin, fiddle, upright bass, and gently brushed guitar. The arrangement feels at once intimate and vast, like lamplight spilling across a darkened room while the night wind stirs outside.

The song moves with quiet gravity, its melody carrying both sorrow and the glimmer of release, like dawn edging over the horizon after a long winter night. It doesn't rush; instead, it leans into stillness, letting sorrow breathe until it turns into something close to grace.

Listening feels like sitting at the edge of winter, watching the first streaks of morning light break through.

Steve Hewitt - In the long run

Article photo - The Americana Heartbeat - September 2025

In the Long Run, taken from Steve Hewitt's new album Never Two Days The Same, feels like the open-road anthem at its heart, reminding us that the simplest melodies carry the deepest sense of freedom.

Driven by a steady, vivid rhythm, the track conjures images of long rides beneath a wide Americana sky. Hewitt's velvety voice sits warm and steady at the center, while the rustic instrumentation brings out the spirit of folk, country, and acoustic storytelling.

Produced by Paul West with contributions from Louise Parsons, Ant Wellman, and Miriam Cox, the whole album leans into stripped-down authenticity, and In the Long Run stands as one of its most beautiful journeys.

Duke & Goldie - West End Queen (Abattoir)

Article photo - The Americana Heartbeat - September 2025

Duke & Goldie's West End Queen (Abattoir) moves like a sunbeam through Laurel Canyon haze; playful harmonies curling over acoustic strums, both tender and sharp. Their voices entwine with an easy warmth, yet the lyrics carry a sting, a story of love and ruin told with a smile that lingers just long enough to hurt.

It feels like wandering a dusty roadside carnival at dusk: glowing lights, laughter in the air, and the faint ache of something already slipping away.

The Holy Gasp - Out of the Hands of the Wicked

The Holy Gasp's Out of the Hands of the Wicked is a staggering achievement in modern music, a true genre-defying masterpiece. Part Southern Gothic, part orchestral folk, part avant-garde theatricality, it blends banjo, fiddle, tuba, trombone, and full string and woodwind sections into a sound that is simultaneously grand, intimate, and utterly unique.

Benjamin Hackman's commanding lead vocals and songwriting are at the heart of the piece, complemented by the incredible musicianship of Anthony William Wallace, Will Hunter, Jaron Freeman-Fox, and the rest of the ensemble. The choir - Anaïs Kelsey-Verdecchia, Tammy Whetham, Zorana Sadiq, Nathan Smith, David Wall, Jeffrey Carl, and Richard Hrytzak adds depth and drama, weaving human emotion directly into the orchestration.

The accompanying video, directed by Luke Sargent and brought to life with puppetry by Kira Hall, Kristi Ann Holt, and a dedicated team of performers, is a visual tour de force. Set design, prop work, cinematography, and sound design come together to create a world both haunting and whimsical, a perfect complement to the music. Every creative hand involved - from conductors to percussionists, from actors to visual designers - has elevated this project into something beyond a song: it's an immersive, unforgettable experience.

Out of the Hands of the Wicked is a work of art that shows what happens when brilliant musicians, visionary directors, and dedicated collaborators unite.

Young Martyrs - Never Gave You The Blues

Young Martyrs breathe new life into their 2023 single Never Gave You The Blues with a brand-new music video. Blending tender rhythms, soaring country-tinged guitars, and the haunting beauty of Natalie Brice's guest vocals, the song tells a he-said/she-said story of love unraveling.

Ache and sweetness blend flawlessly in Tom Corneill's delivery, carried by the band's lush harmonies and timeless alt-Americana sound.
