With unconditionally, indie Northern Irish art-rock band Aqua Tofana delivers a self-empowering, experimental rock track that marks a bold step in their evolving sound. The single offers a raw yet motivational look into themes of self-love, building confidence, and creative perseverance.
The band consists of Eva Kearney (lead singer), Joseph Toman (backing vocals and keys), Summer McGibbon (bass), Danny Trouton (producer and drummer), and Nolan Donnelly (guitar and backing vocals). The track offers a personal and vulnerable look into the inner life of the band, particularly the lead singer, Eva Kearney.
Known for their fusion of synths with a rock backdrop, Aqua Tofana transforms vulnerability into empowerment, making unconditionally feel both intimate and universally resonant.
Sonically, the song feels uplifting and leans into the atmospheric without losing its rock backbone. It opens with echoing electric guitar lines that are intentionally stripped back, drawing listeners into the emotional journey. As the track progresses, it builds into an upbeat atmosphere with shimmering synths and a crescendo of drums that flow seamlessly into the second verse.
It was recorded at Tree Song Studios in Lisburn and produced by the enigmatic Danny Trouton. The production is crisp and deliberate, with careful attention to spatial depth. Synths are subtly panned to create an immersive stereo field, and reverb and delay are used sparingly to lift emotional moments without overwhelming the core instrumentation. The dynamic layering, especially the way the backing vocals are introduced in waves, adds both momentum and intimacy. Throughout the song, you can feel Eva and the band’s pursuit of confidence and unconditional self-love, made all the more powerful by the production’s balance between boldness and vulnerability.

Eva Kearney has shared that the heart of unconditionally is about "finding self-love to push myself as much as I can as a musician". She elaborates on this, noting how she was "afraid of failure and what people thought of me", particularly as a performer. She reflects that "performers can be their own worst critic and will tell themselves they aren’t good enough or are getting too old". These insights into the industry’s pressures are deeply relatable, but Kearney challenges these fears through her art. This is evident in the song’s self-reflective lyrics, particularly when she belts out in the chorus, "Yes, I’m afraid to love myself unconditionally”.
However, unconditionally reaches beyond the music industry. The song expresses a universal experience of struggling with self-worth. This is exactly what Aqua Tofana, and Eva, in particular, wanted to convey. As she explains, "I haven’t fixed my search for self-love and experience, but that’s also what my music is about", adding that the song is dedicated to all the wallflowers and black sheep of their families.
Long-time fans of Aqua Tofana will not be disappointed. With infectious lyrics and captivating production, the band maintains the core essence of their sound in this new release. The hypnotic and gritty vocals, combined with echoing synths, strumming guitars, and layered drums, create a kaleidoscope of sound. The blend of textures supports the hopeful and uplifting lyrics that evoke strength in self-love and the freedom to be yourself.
