Dreamhouse by the Ocean: Best New Ambient Music - September 2026
Welcome to Dreamhouse by The Ocean - a series where I hand-pick some of my favourite new ambient music.
Featuring Zerolex, Moon Projection, Jonathan Crossley, ladr ache, Maxime Denuc, Francesca Heart, Sole Massif, ADRIANA, Ryuichi Shima and Ancient Astronaut.

This edition features: a piece that has the delicate shell-like quality of memory; a piece with shimmering, twanging wonky textures that sound like raindrops ricocheting off a string; a dystopian soundscape that whirs with the steely indifference of surveillance machinery in vast server rooms, capturing its hostility and cold indifference; a piece that sounds like be in the opening scene of a particularly strange Yorgos Lanthimos movie; a piece that sounds like one of those weird, glitchy soundscapes uploaded to YouTube by an Aphex Twin fan who unearthed some previously unknown experimental piece from his vast repertoire and more!

Sole Massif - Deca 30 Compound

This is the opening track to the album ‘Critical Threat Modeling.’
It feels like we are en route to the bleakest possible outcome of technology at the moment; this album fast-forwards into the unknown of the future, to a hostile dystopia:
“The boundary is gone. We have integrated them into the very fabric of the state. They do not hesitate. There's no correcting for the machine's bias, Deca units run on probability, not conscience. Neural network feeds by ingesting data, modeling threats, and striking with a sub-second precision that renders life obsolete. They are the combination of our darkest tactical history and algorithmic design. Compliance is no longer a choice; it is the default state.” [via Bandcamp]
‘Deca 30 Compound’ is alive with the whir of surveillance machinery in vast server rooms, its tendrils creeping out like tentacles, scanning and invading every part of people’s lives, remaining coldly indifferent. The soundscape feels metallic, capturing the inhuman space these machines inhabit, every so often surging with electromagnetic light, scanning for statistical threats, ready to wipe out a human life without pause.

Zerolex - Nanterre, jour deux

This is taken from the upcoming album ‘Lignes’ which will be out October 30th, 2026. ‘Nanterre, jour deux’ opens with shimmering, twanging wonky textures that sound like raindrops ricocheting off a string. Solar-powered pads drift around them, with sparkling textures coming in every so often, giving the effect of sunlight sparkling off the water's reflection.

Moon Projection - Light Through Clouds

This is just a magical listening experience. It sounds like waking up submerged in the plush greenery of a mountain or meadow within a fantasy realm.
It sounds like how alive your senses feel after a brush with mortality or illness; how, when you have an experience like this, you look around, drinking in every second of life, appreciating this planet for the paradise that it is. This particular feeling is rather hard to capture, but it is captured here, and it is absolutely beautiful. It took my breath away.
This is taken from the EP ‘Slow Skies’ (out October 2nd).

ladr ache - Du fleuve à la mer

This is taken from the album ‘éclats Z ’, an album from ladr ache, an experimental group from Brussels who are “a polyphonic montage of 6 voices rooted in heretic drones and city beats, saturated cobblestones and oscillating circles” (quoted from their website, which you can read more about here).
I found this strange and enchanting, as if it was lulling me into a hypnotic trance. For some reason, it feels like it could be in the opening scene of a particularly strange Yorgos Lanthimos movie. This is a bouquet of genre-defying strangeness, making it sound like it could be from any time throughout history. ‘Lemon off’ is another favourite of mine from the album.

Maxime Denuc - Hallucinogen

This has the delicate shell-like quality of a memory. ‘Hallucinogen’ is the opening to the album ‘Club Imperiale’; a piece of speculative historical fiction set in the (now closed) prolific nightclub located on Italy’s coast. If you are curious, Google “'Club Imperiale' Italy 1990s” and you will find no shortage of photos of people having a fantastic time in its heyday.
‘Hallucinogen’ sounds aquatic, creating a dream-like ambience: the air sparkling with possibilities and anticipation. Although I have never been there, I felt like I was on the coast looking out at the blue ocean, the skies melting from blue to pink, watching the light refract on the ocean as the sun set, somewhere between reality and a dream.
It references 'LSD' by Simon Posford, and “interpolates a minuscule section of Posford's original, mapping its brain-tickling squelches to the pipe organ and using the church's natural reverb to capture the vast majesty of the building. "I tried to construct a whole world on top of it," Denuc explains” [via Bandcamp].

Ryuichi Shima - Msv#4

This is like one of those weird, glitchy soundscapes uploaded to YouTube by an Aphex Twin fan who unearthed some previously unknown experimental piece from his vast repertoire.
The piece is “an abstract electronic instrumental moving between IDM and experimental electronica, where shifting rhythms and evolving layers unfold through a dark, cinematic space. The track continues from the beat heard at the end of Msv#3, reshaped through improvised glitch and stutter processing”.
Every time you think you know what is happening within its shifting, opaque world, it blooms into something stranger, creating an evasive yet bewitching listening experience.

Francesca Heart - A Good Day

This is taken from the EP ‘Afterimage’ by composer Francesca Heart. ‘A Good Day’ greets you with a wave of blissful, dreamy sounds from paradise. In fact, it sounds rather a lot like a sonic representation of the above image: a rich blue, azure soundscape that creates a space for you to sink into, thoroughly at peace.

ADRIANA - broken pieces

I came across this on YouTube via the title ‘I will delete this album on September 22 at 22:22’ which I believe has since been renamed to ‘i will not delete this album on october 2’. I was entranced by the motherboard shaped like a cat, and wasn’t sure what to expect. What awaited me was a sparkling celestial piece that felt like velvet being poured over my ears, sprinkled with shimmering, glittering stars.
There is a sadness to this, not the overwhelming kind, the kind that makes you want to dig beneath the fabric of the sound to find what wonders await underneath. Magical.

Jonathan Crossley, David Kollar, and Lukas Ligeti - Solace (feat Arve Henriksen)
The opening of ‘Solace’ sounds like the sun rising in a blood-red sky. It feels alive with the morning dew, the stirrings of a planet waking up.
This is taken from the album of the same name, which is “a wholly improvised collaboration from Jonathan Crossley, David Kollar, and Lukas Ligeti, born out of a 2024 artistic residency at the University of Liverpool. The album unfolds as a real-time dialogue between Crossley and Kollar's digitally enabled guitar work and Ligeti's polymetric, Africa-inflected drumming, drifting between ambient stillness, pulsating momentum, and intricate rhythmic terrain” [via the 7D Media website].
The trumpet, performed by Arve Henriksen, is deeply moving. The soundscape is alive in a way only possible with a live performance where each musician is listening deeply and responding to the others, resulting in a piece that simmers with life, weaving a rich, vivid tale.
This is taken from the album ‘Solace’ which you can get here.

Ancient Astronaut - Planetary Motion

This is taken from the immersive EP ‘Celestial Orbits’, which is inspired by the “perpetual movement of planets through the cosmos”. This sounds like journeying through the glittering dust and gas clouds of the nebula, and arriving at a vast, ancient planet. It captures the magnificence of watching this vast planetary body moving slowly, as you take it all in, witnessing its beauty. Although the piece is constantly in motion, it has a stillness, capturing its theme perfectly.
