An Interview With Jeff Mulvihill, Brand Manager of Mapex Drums
Jeff Mulvihill shares insights on innovation, artist collaborations, the principles behind Mapex's 35 years of success, and more.

Jeff Mulvihill is the brand manager of both Mapex and Sonor drums and is a working drummer in Nashville, Tennessee. He is extremely knowledgeable in the drum manufacturing business.
I spoke to him about innovation, artists endorsements, and why Mapex drums sound so amazing.
Magesh, Musicngear: Mapex drums recently celebrated their 35th anniversary. Why do you think this brand has been so successful for decades?
Mapex has matured from a production facility for other brands to a full multi-segment drum brand offering products for the very beginner to the most discerning professional. Success through the decades is proven through global growth and adherence to a “high value” principle in product and brand development.
I used the Mapex 'Janus' pedal years ago which was way ahead of its time. It was a double pedal that integrated with the hi-hat stand. Does Mapex have a concept when it comes to innovation?
The Janus pedal was an interesting product and while short-lived, that is an example of mechanical innovation from that period.
Currently, our philosophy of innovation has been focused on sound and purpose-built designs to produce certain sounds.
This Mapex legacy of "sound first" principles is integrated into every part of drum design while sticking to our “high value” proposition. Drawing from decades of engineering and innovation, these drums mark a breakthrough in the evolution of acoustic drum science by continuing to experiment with shell materials, mounting systems, sonic rings, hoops, and every other design appointment affecting the sound of the instrument.
The new Saturn evolution kits look amazing! Is there a lot of R&D at Mapex when it comes to creating new products?
Yes. We are always looking for opportunities in the market for new sounds and innovation to fuel drummer’s creativity.
Often overlooked, we spend time researching new entry-level products so even the most beginner drummer can approach the instrument, put it together easily, and get a great sound so they are hooked on drumming for life.
I noticed Mapex is one of the few companies that works with artists to create custom snare drums. How important are endorsees to a drum company?
Well, first of all, I think there are quite a few companies that work with artists on signature products and we feel that our artists are incredibly important to what we do.
Mapex artists are true ambassadors for the brand and we are proud to be a part of so much great music being made all over the world.
I have used the Black Panther snare drum on rock, funk, pop, and even drum n bass gigs. It is one of the most versatile snare drums I have ever played. Can you talk about how it was created?
Black Panther snare drums were launched by Mapex in 1997 as an identifiable series of pro-level snare drums with a memorable series name establishing them in the minds of drummers as something special.
The series has evolved several times over the years. The current lineup of 16 models each has a descriptive sound concept and holds a place on our Black Panther Sonic Flow chart.
What products is Mapex currently working on?
We are working on many exciting things for the future and we always plan several product launches and upgrades per year.
We never stop!
