Kahuti's "Malaika" Is a Warm, Multilingual Love Letter from Nairobi
Swahili, Kikuyu and English meet in a soulful Afro-R&B song about the kind of love that makes someone feel like an angel.
There are love songs that try to make romance sound larger than life, and then there are songs that simply stop for a moment and appreciate a person for who they are. Kahuti's new single, "Malaika" belongs to the latter camp.
Released today, August 28, the Nairobi-based Kenyan artist brings together Afro-R&B, Swahili, Kikuyu and English to tell a beautifully straightforward story: finding someone who brings light, strength and love into your life, and making sure they know just how much they mean to you.
There's something wonderfully human about that simplicity.
"Malaika", meaning angel, is built around admiration. Kahuti sings about a woman who is strong, beautiful, loving and deeply cherished, giving the track an intimate emotional core while keeping its feet firmly planted in contemporary African sounds. Rather than turning the sentiment into something overly dramatic, the song feels like a genuine expression of gratitude for having found someone special.
And I particularly love the multilingual character of it. Moving between Swahili, Kikuyu and English gives the song a sense of place as well as intimacy, allowing Kahuti to express his affection through different shades of language. It feels personal without needing to explain itself.
Behind the song, Kahuti is becoming increasingly involved in his own creative process. He wrote and performed "Malaika", co-produced it alongside producer Big Vinny, while August IV handled the mixing and mastering. That growing involvement in production is an interesting part of Kahuti's development as an artist, suggesting someone who isn't simply looking for a sound, but gradually shaping one of his own.
The single follows "Feel The Love", Kahuti’s collaboration with Kinoti, which has surpassed 2.5 million YouTube views and helped build momentum around his work. With live performances, media appearances and an expanding catalogue behind him, Kahuti is steadily carving out his place within Kenya’s evolving music scene.
But for now, I'd simply let Malaika do what it does best.
It's warm. It's affectionate. It's uncomplicated in the best possible way: a song about looking at someone you love and thinking, you really are something special.
And sometimes, that's more than enough.
