This month, I'd like to turn the spotlight on a fresh wave of Heavy Metal releases. From the timeless power of traditional Heavy Metal and the ambitious, ever-evolving worlds of Progressive Metal to the soaring melodies and epic storytelling of Power Metal, June has delivered another impressive collection of new music. Once again, I'm amazed by the number of talented bands creating passionate, high-quality records far beyond the reach of the mainstream.

The Resilient Dream Project - Alis
I always loved bands that push the envelope. This Power Metal unit created a song that goes for 28 minutes! This is essentially like an orchestra piece. It has incredible unison and harmony lines played by the guitars and fierce double-time beats by the drummer. Vocals with sweet harmonies in the high register kick in towards the end. This is a really epic piece of music.

Redshift - Birth
This is an incredibly well-written song. It is played by a group of super-talented musicians who have spent thousands of hours learning their respective instruments. There are odd time changes and incredible unison runs that the band plays together. It has Power and Prog metal influences in the same vein as Dream Theatre and On the Virg. A great song by great musicians.

Dualisis - Us
This is a great Metal/Rock track. The guitar tone is amazing with just the right amount of distortion and reverb. It sounds like the guitars are tuned down or the riff is played on a 7-string guitar made popular by guitar legend Steve Vai. The female vocalist is excellent, comfortable in many registers.
I am blown away by the drum sound, which is punchy and raw without being over-compressed. This is a cool track.

Masterplan - Chase The Light
This track really shows the band's versatility. It starts with strings, which creates a nice mellow intro before the double-time drum beat comes in. The band is super tight, playing multiple riffs in unison. I’m impressed with the singer's high register chops; it is no easy feat to deliver melodies that high effortlessly. Make sure you check out the blistering guitar solo at 3 minutes 30 mark.

Spread Eagle - Street Noise
This track reminds me of early Motorhead with classic Heavy Metal riffs and vocals full of attitude. The drummer creates a great up-tempo rock beat that drives the song throughout. I like the guitar player's tone and use of vibrato in the solos. This song is quite short, coming in under 3 minutes, and would be awesome live if you were in a mosh pit.

Axemaster - Murder Of Crows
This is a cool track! It starts with little kids singing a nursery rhyme, which is super creepy. I don’t recommend listening to this before you go to bed unless you enjoy nightmares. The guitar riff in the intro is super heavy in what I suspect is dropped D tuning for extra low end.
The drummer gets in some nice double bass licks in the pre-chorus, and the bass player lays down a heavy groove. I think the singer has great chops using vibrato in the upper register.

Amberian Dawn - The Vision of Dreaming
This track mixes elements of Power metal and Rock, almost with pop songwriting sensibilities. I enjoy the singer singing most of the song in the upper register. Her tone really suits the song's key without ever straining or pushing. The guitar parts are doubled in the verses, which gives the riffs added thickness. This is a highly polished track with excellent production.

Vanden Plas - Postcard To God
This laid-back track has Power Metal influences with the vocal melody. Personally, I enjoy hearing Metal bands play slower, more dynamic songs because you can hear things that might usually get lost in the mix of a faster, heavier track.
The guitar player has serious chops and I’m guessing he has a background in classical guitar by his note choice and strumming patterns. This is a cool track.

Kilter - Built & Broken
I always try to throw a song that is on the verge of a certain genre. This is definitely that track! This song really has a mash-up of multiple styles, although you couldn’t say it belonged to one particular style.
The drums use a lot of double bass, which you can clearly hear the metal influences, but there are touches of avant-garde with what sounds like a baritone saxophone. The power chords also make it sound Metal.
This song is unusual, but I will always tip my hat to musicians who are trying to do something brand new.

Junius - The Oracle
This track sounds like modern heavy Metal at its best. The guitar riffs are full of distortion and attitude. To my ears, it sounds like the melody is played with an overdrive pedal. The drummer is tight, playing a wide range of dynamics in his beats. The song is structured well with a lot of room for the musicians to really play.

Magesh is a musician and producer who has worked with Rihanna, Lionel Richie, Ricky Martin, Chris Brown, The Pussy Cat Dolls, Nelly Furtado, and Vernon Reid of Living Colour.
He released an instructional drumming DVD called "Unique Beats" where he mixed the drum kit with electronics and Indian hand percussion. He recently moved from Australia to the UK to explore new musical opportunities.
