This month, I’m focusing on three powerful forces that continue to drive the genre forward: Heavy Metal, standing tall with crushing riffs and commanding energy; Progressive Metal, stretching the boundaries with technical precision and adventurous songwriting; and Power Metal, charging ahead with triumphant melodies, heroic themes, and unstoppable drive. Though each style travels its own sonic path, they remain united by the same electrified heartbeat: Metal!

The Metal Inferno - Heavy Metal, Power Metal, Progressive Metal

Post Pulse - Lupaus

This song has elements of metal, progressive, and hardcore. There are some great melodies played on the guitar throughout the song with a cleaner guitar tone. The main heavy riff sounds like it is tuned down to give it more grunt.

The vocals are very aggressive, and the drummer has an incredibly solid groove.

Teramaze - Arrow

This is a more chilled-out song from Australian Metal/Prog band Teramaze. This is a great chance to hear how amazing this vocalist is! He has an impressive range and a great tone that would suit many genres of music.

The band is incredibly tight, which is probably from rehearsing for thousands of hours. The guitarist and bassist have serious chops while the drummer lays down a super solid backbeat.

Against the Grave - Not the One

This is a great mid-tempo heavy groove. The singer's high register is full of aggression, which helps convey the song's emotion. It sounds like the guitars are tuned down for extra heaviness! The drummer has serious chops and is able to put in double bass patterns to elevate the song.

This would be a great song to play loud on your sound system!

The Dead Collective - Goliath

This is a cool track that has a lot of hard rock influences. There is a buildup towards the end of the song that really captures the band's musical ability. There is great use of dynamics with the guitar playing using a clean/flanger sound in the verses before switching to a loud distortion for the Chorus.

There are some great melodies in this song.

Long Distance Calling - The Phantom Void

This is a great Progressive Metal song with very complex musical changes. It reminds me of early Dream Theater. There are times in the song where all the musicians play unison lines that show incredible musicianship.  There are some interseting counter melodies on the guitar in the song’s intro that show a great knowledge of music theory.  The drummer is incredible, playing multiple drum grooves and stretching out into odd time meters.  A great song!

Demon Spell - Dive the Hellfire

This song starts with an incredible drum fill. It seriously sets the tone for the whole song. The guitar riffs are heavy, and the guitar solos are at a blinding speed. The general feel reminds me of early Black Sabbath. This is a cool-sounding pure Heavy Metal song!

Ignobleth - Obelisk Of Deformity

This song has hard metal core influences.  It is unusual in the best way, how it starts at a very slow tempo.  This makes the screeching vocals and detuned guitar riffs sound extra heavy.  Towards the end of the song, the drummer breaks into a double-time feel, which gives the song a lot of momentum.

Forlorn Citadel - Ironclad

This Power metal song uses instruments like the harp and pan flute in the intro. It is an interesting contrast to the heavy distorted guitar that follows. It creates an almost cinematic theme. The song runs for almost 10 minutes, which shows how talented the musicians are to be able to play so many parts for this length of time.

Victorius - Brachio Bazooka Battalion

This Power Metal song is heavily layered with synths. It is a cool contrast against the low bass guitar and thick multiple guitars. The singer has an incredible range spanning multiple octaves. All the harmonies are in the high register, which makes this more impressive. The drummer has a great groove and plays some incredible, complex double bass patterns. This is a really great song!

Green Carnation - Fire in Ice

This progressive Metal track is cool because it is based on a triplet rhythm. It’s a difficult feel to play and make it sound Metal. The vocals are stripped back with not a lot of backing vocals, but this really works for the song. Many layers of guitars create a heavier sound. The drummer displays excellent use of double bass drumming.
