This month, I'd like to look at new Heavy Metal releases. From the thunderous weight of traditional Heavy Metal and the intricate, mind-bending landscapes of Progressive Metal to the soaring intensity and cinematic spirit of Power Metal, I'm always super impressed by the number of talented bands creating music that has nothing to do with the mainstream.

The Metal Inferno - Heavy Metal, Power Metal, Progressive Metal

Cavada Project - Abraxas

This song has elements of Progressive and Heavy Metal. The vocals dive into metalcore territory. I love the intro of this song with its use of electronic music. The drum fill that brings the song in is absolutely perfect; it reminds me of classic Iron Maiden drumming.

The song sounds tuned down for added heaviness. It is short, just over 3 minutes for a metal song, and intense from the first to last bar.

Redshift - The Singer

This is a great mix of progressive and Power Metal. The musicians are highly skilled, playing many lines in unison. There are also a lot of complex changes. The guitar player really gets to be free in the lead break at the 5-minute mark. The drummer has incredible double bass chops. This is a great track!

Post Pulse - Incredible Creatures

The singer of this band has some serious vocal chops, changing registers effortlessly. This Heavy Metal tune creates a lot of aggression in the double-time parts. Although the halftime groove is where the band’s melodic side really shines. A super tight Metal outfit that would be great to see live!

TERAMAZE - Mr Crazy

I like this Progressive Metal track for its use of melody.  It’s very easy to get caught up in chops in the style of music, but that is not the case with this band. The guitarist has a great tone with the perfect amount of distortion. The drummer plays a driving double-time beat for most of the song with well-placed double bass drum fills.

It is well produced, allowing the vocals to be heard but without losing the power of the rhythm section.

Against the Grave - Not the One

This Metal track starts with a bone-crushing guitar riff. It is played in unison with the bass for added low end while the drummer lays down a heavy drum groove. I was very impressed with the production, which is slick without being overproduced. The singer's intensity really helps convey the emotion of the song.

Restless Spirit - The Burning Need

This song mixes Rock and Progressive Metal. It plays one of the hardest feels ….The shuffle. This rhythm is based on triplets and is very difficult to make sound heavy. It is similar to Thin Lizzy’s Boys Are Back in Town’ and Metallica’s ‘For Whom the Bells Toll.

There are some great cymbal catches by the drummer in the intro, accenting the main guitar riff. The drum groove is broken up, but solid as a rock. The singer has a great bass tone in his voice, perfect for this style of music.

GODSNAKE - Scream for a Bullet

This Power Metal track has a singer with incredible intensity. His range lets him emote through both high and lower octaves. The drummer plays with incredible finesse and precision. This is evident in his blistering double bass fills.

I love the guitar player's tone, which has the perfect amount of distortion. The guitar is also at the perfect place sonically in the mix. A great track!

Tungsten - The North Will Rise feat. Sonata Arctica

This is a great Power Metal song that builds tension from the first bar. The guest vocalist excels at singing high notes in the soprano range. It is short for a Metal song, under 4 minutes, but still makes its mark. The guitar solo is brief but adds the right amount of intensity to the song.

Siege Perilous - Ancient Rite

This Progressive Metal track starts with a super melodic acoustic guitar part. I like it when Metal bands play simplified parts, as you can really hear the melody. The electric guitars play a unison after the mellow intro. It is full speed ahead once the drums kick in.

The singer has incredible vibrato, almost on an operatic level. If you listen closely to the guitar in the choruses, it plays a counter melody to the main vocal part. A very cool track.

Melting - Glare

This track mixes Metal, hardcore, and metalcore. The growling vocals throughout the song make it aggressive and in your face. The main guitar part sounds doubled and tuned down. This low tuning is really to create tones heavier than would be possible in a standard tuning.

The bass player lays down a solid groove while the drummer really improvises around the beat. The raw production adds to the song's heaviness.
