From Ordinary to Epic: How Soundboks Lightboks Transformed Our Rehearsal Studio Sessions

We put Soundboks Lightboks to the test in a real studio environment, lighting five different bands in one small room with zero programming and minimal setup time. From impressive light shows and long battery life to a few honest shortcomings, this feature covers what worked, what didn’t, and why Lightboks ended up feeling like a genuinely smart investment.

Lighting is often the last thing people think about in rehearsal spaces - until it starts affecting performance, inspiration, and content quality. At MusicnGear's Studio 1, we’ve worked with countless bands in a compact room where sound is controlled, gear is dialed in, but lighting has traditionally been an afterthought.

For this feature, we introduced SOUNDBOKS Lightboks see price into our rehearsal workflow to see whether a portable, music-reactive lighting system could meaningfully improve both the atmosphere and the results - musically and visually.

We tested 2x Lightboks across sessions with five different bands, all sharing the same small room, the same setup, and different musical styles.

The Problem: Flat Light, Flat Energy

Before Lightboks, our studio lighting was functional but uninspiring. We relied on a few cheap 15-euro PAR cans that had been in use for years. They were worn out, inconsistent, and visually stale. Technically, they worked - creatively, they did very little. The atmosphere of the rehearsal space felt sterile. Every session looked the same. No matter how different the band or the music, the room never changed character. That matters more than people realize.

Rehearsal spaces are where bands shape ideas, lock in performances, and build confidence. When the environment feels lifeless, energy often drops with it. Musicians react to space and mood, even subconsciously. The issue became even more obvious when filming video content. Any clips we recorded quickly started to feel repetitive and boring. Different bands, same room, same lighting, same visual language. The performances were strong - the visuals were not keeping up.

We brought in Lightboks to fix exactly this problem.

Why Lightboks Make Sense for a Rehearsal Studio

Small rehearsal rooms are unforgiving. There’s no distance to hide bad lighting, no time for complex setups, and no room for technical distractions. If a lighting system works well here, it will work almost anywhere. Our expectations were simple:

  • Fast setup
  • No programming
  • Strong visual impact
  • Adaptable to different bands and moods

In short: could lighting become a creative tool, not just a necessity? Lightboks promised a turnkey lighting solution - so that’s exactly what we wanted to test.

Setup & First Impressions

Physically, Lightboks immediately feels well-built and durable. The housing is solid, confidence-inspiring, and clearly designed to survive real-world use. These don’t feel like fragile studio toys - they feel like gear you wouldn’t panic about if one took a knock or even a drop.

Battery life was another strong point. Even across multiple sessions, we never felt pressured to recharge mid-use. For rehearsals, short video shoots, or mobile setups, this matters a lot.

One thing worth mentioning: we did encounter some initial pairing issues with the app. It wasn’t a deal-breaker, but it did slow things down briefly. Once paired, things ran smoothly, but this is something Soundboks could improve with updates. Also a small design wish: we’d love to see a dedicated hanging point or mounting hole built into the unit. It’s not essential, but it would open up even more placement options in studio environments.

Turnkey Lighting That Actually Feels Turnkey

Lightboks doesn’t ask you to think like a lighting designer. There’s no DMX programming, no scene building, no learning curve. You power it on, select one of the 3 modes, and it reacts intelligently to the music.

The three main lighting modes turned out to be genuinely useful rather than gimmicky. Each offered a distinct feel, making it easy to adapt the room depending on the band and the song - without touching a laptop or controller.

This made it possible to reshape the entire atmosphere of the room in seconds.

App Control & Connectivity

Lightboks works with the free Soundboks app on iOS and Android. The app lets you adjust:

  • Energy mode
  • Color palette
  • Sync multiple units via TeamUp
  • Save presets

This gives you remote control and customization beyond the hardware buttons. TeamUp lets you link multiple Lightboks units wirelessly for bigger, synchronized shows without DMX.

Five Bands. One Room. Completely Different Atmospheres.

We used the same two Lightboks units with five different bands (The Appointment, Novelty Acts, Mobvibe, Misty Floor, Sandy Bunny), all performing in the same compact rehearsal space. What changed was the mood. Some bands leaned into darker, more focused lighting. Others benefited from more movement and energy. In every case, the lighting helped create a sense of occasion - even though this was still very much a rehearsal environment.

All five bands commented on the lighting unprompted. Several were genuinely impressed by how much it changed the feel of the room, and some are seriously considering buying Lightboks for their own setups. That reaction alone says a lot.

Lightboks didn’t just improve rehearsals.

It fixed our video problem.

Fog Changes Everything

To push things further, we paired Lightboks with a fog machine (Stairville AF-40 DMX Mini Fog Machine) - and this took the entire setup to another level. The beams became visible, depth increased dramatically, and the room suddenly felt larger, more cinematic, and more alive. For short-form videos, rehearsal footage, or even music video or photo shoots, this combination is extremely effective.  It’s one of those moments where you realize how much visual atmosphere influences both performance and perception.

Video Content That Finally Feels Fresh Again

Lightboks didn’t just improve rehearsals - it fixed our video problem.

We filmed one video for each of the five bands across 5 days, and for the first time in a long while, the footage didn’t feel repetitive. Same room, same camera positions - completely different visual identities.

( this promo also acts as a teaser for the upcoming MusicnGear Studio 1 Session series, where full performances from the same bands will be released soon on our Youtube channel)

Soundboks Lightboks in Real Use

Lightboks shines in exactly the scenarios many musicians, studios, and creators face:

  • Rehearsal spaces
  • Small studios
  • Short-form video content
  • Photo shoots
  • Music videos
  • Fast setups without technical overhead

Lighting can now be part of the creative process - fast, flexible, and effective, without needing special programming or extra crew.

One thing we didn’t get to test - and would really like to - is trying out Lightboks with a Soundboks speaker for the full ecosystem experience. That feels like the natural next step.

Final Verdict: A Worthy Investment

Soundboks Lightboks delivers where it matters:

  • Excellent build quality
  • Strong battery life
  • Impressive, music-reactive light shows
  • Truly easy, turnkey operation

Despite minor app pairing hiccups and a few design wishes, Lightboks fundamentally changed how our rehearsal space feels and functions. It brought atmosphere back into the room, improved performances, and elevated our video content instantly. For us, this wasn’t just new lighting - it was a reset button. A very worthy investment.
